Fat Dogs Aren’t Allowed
Oh boy! Never thought traveling with a dog would prove to be so difficult. As I mentioned I’m planning on walking the Saint James Walk with Doggy, however, getting to Sarria(our starting point) from Seville is becoming a huge headache since driving is not an option. First thought was taking a high speed train to Madrid and from there a regional train to this little village that up to a week ago I’ve never heard of, my guess is that there’s not even a train stop, you just tuck and roll and they throw your luggage off. After some research it turns out that pets are not allowed on any train other than those within the metro area, kind of ironic right? You would think that the problem would be taking your dog on city mass transportation where there is little room even for humans. I looked up the next viable option, flying, on my face! The nearest airport is about 60 miles away from where I wanna go and to get there I would have to take the train on which pets are not allowed. And here comes the shocker, pets are allowed on buses, yeah, you read it right, BUSES, of course on the luggage section without AC. When I heard that I couldn’t help but ask who on their right mind would put a dog down there??!!Who??!! And then, sooner than I expected my question was answered at the park, a girl is going from Seville to Asturias (500 f-ing miles!!!!) with her poor dog, she said she didn’t have any other option but she does, flying! Anyhow, I was not going to discuss that issue with her because I have my own traveling problems to face.
So far what I’ve learned is that if your dog weighs more than 15lbs traveling options are slim, skinny , close to nil.

I’m sorry you are having such difficulty with this. That woman needs her head examined. She will traumatize her dog and then get rid of it because she doesn’t know what’s wrong with it!!
I don’t take the dogs anywhere that I can’t drive. She does have another option, boarding the dog at the kennel. I am assuming of course, you have doggie boarding faciliites in Spain?
Believe me when I say, shoving your dog in a crate and putting him in a cargo hold isn’t very pleasant. I feel for any dog that must travel that way.
We’ll figure something else and if that becomes much of a hassle we’ll head up the mountains in southern Spain where driving is possible and have a good time hiking there. I gotta check into the pet boarding, I’ve heard really bad thing about the most used in here, I don’t wanna put Doggy through anything too stressing this early in his life, still a puppy.
You are wise to check that. You want to make sure it is right for doggy.
OMG I hope you will find a way to make your pilgrimage with doggy. We had same problems to get a ferry to uk or a train. I wish I had my own Jet ;o)))))))
Having a private jet would be great, or wings like the bats that invaded your place. I’ll send an email to the guy of the blog you posted on a precious comment asking him tips regarding accommodation cuz I have the feeling that’s gonna be a little complicated too.
maybe this:
http://www.caminodesantiagoconperro.com/
or would it be possible to rent a car?(europcar is in seville, lugo&santiago de c.) if you make 2 reservations ,one from seville to sarria(lugo), the other from santiago de compostela to seville one week later? I have no knowledge about the traffic and car driving in spain, so it could be an idea from easy’s bad idea catalog
)
I could fly to La Coruña(nearest airport) and the rent a car from there to Sarria however, I can’t drop the car in Sarria, they don’t have that kind of services, I already called. I even asked if there was a way I could pay a driver so he could drive the car back to Lugo or even Coruña. Their answer: No sir, won’t do. Useless if you ask me. Probably a taxi from Coruna to Sarria, it’ll be expensive but it also an option.
An thank you for all the info, you should open an agency of any kind once you are released from the boot camp.
Thanks, made my day
)))… Its sad that such a nice idea gets so complicated. I hope you’ll find a way.
Wow! No good solution. It sounds like a great trip for a dog to go along on too. Let us know how you make out.
This is outrageous! We hope you find a way to do the trip with Doggy.
Bella and DiDi
We’ll figure it out. I have to get there and have Doggy’s demons cast away.
Wow, yoo’s must have one hell of a headache, trying tooo sort all this out!
Big Hugs
Mollie xx
Hope you manage to figure something out, sounds all a bit complicated!
Who’d think traveling would be so difficult??!! You need to find another dog owner/lover who wants to do the same trip and would drive.
Good luck! Sounds like a royal pain.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. Glad you enjoyed the book pictures. Have you read my posts about our foster pit bulls? They were a blast. Stop by any time and I look forward for hearing what happens with your trip.
I’m actually going with another dog owner, but we are more than 500 miles away from where we want to start, and the problem with driving is that you would have to go back to pick up the car once you are done with the walk. A hassle, we are still looking for options, so far fly and then pay a taxi sound the most likely and viable option.
I’m taking a look at blog ATM, I like what I’ve seen fo far.
Thanks for passing by.
It is the same here. Then when you get there they have restrictions on the size of dogs that can say in hotel rooms. Now you know why we have the big truck and are getting the trailer.
Hope you can work it out.
You do have a problem on your hands! Incredibly frustrating. I am surprised you can’t take dogs on trains in Spain – it’s not a problem in France. Interested to hear what you decide on in the end.
It’s likely I’ll end up heading to southern Portugal and hike around there, I’ll leave the saint James way for next year and plan it better.
Perhaps you can get a friend who doesn’t like walking to drop you at the beginning, they can then go ahead and have a nice lazy time in the area where you’re headed to.
Ugh, that doesn’t sound good. So frustrating!!
